A Commitment to Caring

At General Motors Acceptance Corporation of Canada, Limited (GMAC), we believe that being a good corporate citizen goes beyond simply donations and event sponsorships. Whether it is helping to pour the concrete for a new housing project or our staff volunteering their time at local schools, GMAC's involvement is always at the grass-roots level. After all, what better way to invest in Canada's communities than to help out its most valuable resource, its people.

GMAC's philanthropic plan is two-fold:

  • Supporting Employee Volunteerism - Every year, hundreds of GMAC employees donate their time, energy and expertise to the communities in which they live and work.
  • Supporting Children's Education - GMAC assists children's educational needs through charitable contributions, in-kind donations and employee involvement.

The following are just a few of the countless ways in which GMAC and its employees strive to make a difference:

GMAC Great Canadian Writing Contest

GMAC is proud to support the GMAC Great Canadian Writing Contest , a Canada-wide, bilingual writing contest, for children in grades 5 and 6.

This contest was developed to further GMAC's commitment to fostering improved literacy. The GMAC Great Canadian Writing Contest is designed to engage children in writing, while providing a fun and exciting activity that turns winning entrants into published authors!

Children can enter the contest individually or through their school, library, or family literacy program. Entrants write a short story (approximately 200 words or less) on a specific theme, have an adult read and edit their work, and illustrate a book cover to go along with the story.

In addition to regional and first place winners receiving copies of the published book with their winning stories, a donation of $1,000 worth of books will be delivered to the school, library or family literacy program of five regional winners choosing. Many winning entrants will also be awarded literacy-themed GMAC Great Canadian Writing Contest Prize Packs. Plus entrants will have the opportunity to win the Great Grand Prize - a group visit from award-winning Canadian author Kenneth Oppel. A complete list of winners, with a selection of winning stories, will be posted on the contest website.

The 2007 contest opens February 19, 2007 and runs through to April 16, 2007. For more information and a contest entry form, visit: www.gmacgreatcanadianwritingcontest.ca

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an independent, charitable, faith-based housing program dedicated to the elimination of poverty housing by building homes in partnership with families in need. Founded by Millard and Linda Fuller, Habitat for Humanity International and its affiliates support more than 3,000 communities in 92 nations and have built and sold more than 160,000 no-profit, zero-interest mortgages to partner families.

As GMAC's premier global charity, Habitat for Humanity International has seen more than one hundred homes in five countries built with the support of GMAC. Since 2003, GMAC's involvement has increased to a More than House partner, with donations reaching the million dollar level. Proof of that was the 2003 GMAC output of 41 houses in U.S.A., Canada, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

In Canada, GMAC has been involved with Habitat for Humanity Canada since 2001. Our employees have donated thousands of hours to help build affordable homes for deserving families through the country.

Habitat for Humanity breaks the poverty cycle and improves a family's financial situation leading to a renewed sense of confidence and independence. At GMAC, we take great pride in being part of the solution.
