Community Relations

At GMAC we believe that housing and education—especially financial literacy—are key to building strong, sustainable communities. Our community-building strategy also includes mentorship and youth development. We are extremely proud of these signature activities:

Habitat for Humanity

For the last 17 years, GMAC has shared the Habitat for Humanity vision of homeownership, believing that everyone in the world deserves a decent place to call home. In 2007, GMAC contributed more than $650,000 and built 15 homes across the United States. GMAC employees, family members and local auto dealers volunteered more than 8,500 hours to build homes in places such as Denver; Pittsburgh; Minneapolis; Salt Lake City; Sacramento, Calif. and Charlotte, N.C. GMAC also sponsored Habitat for Humanity build projects in Canada, Mexico and Australia.

Financial Literacy

GMAC Financial Services strongly believes in consumer education, particularly in the area of financial literacy. Through the SmartEdge Web site (www.SmartEdgebyGMAC.com) and seminars, consumers can learn valuable information that will help unlock the mysteries of personal credit, vehicle financing and homeownership.

In 2007, GMAC hosted more than 2,300 SmartEdge events and seminars in cities across the country. A total of 1,375 seminars were presented to high school and college students to ensure they had information to make smart choices about their financial future.

Presidential Scholar

For more than 20 years, GMAC has acted as the primary sponsor for the program's annual National Recognition Week, which takes place in June in Washington, D.C. In 2007, GMAC provided each student with an allowance for college textbooks, as well as an opportunity to gain valuable financial advice through the SmartEdge by GMAC financial literacy program.

This year, the list of 2008 candidates includes more than 2,800 high school seniors, chosen from the approximately 2.9 million students expected to graduate this year. The Commission on Presidential Scholars will select and honor 141 students for their academic achievement, artistic accomplishments, leadership and civic values.
